The Serta Mattress Company was founded in 1931 when a group of 13 independent producers joined together. They did so because they realized there is strength in numbers and they would have a better chance of success that way.

In just 9 short years they became a powerhouse in the industry with 20 more manufacturers signing up. They made up a hefty chunk of the market share by 1940 and it was then they officially changed the name to Serta Inc.

Company History

Shortly after, during World War 2, they introduced the first Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress which would become their most famous product.

In the 1960's they were still growing quickly with over 39 plants worldwide.

During the 70's, they introduced the luxurious Serta pillow top mattress which disproved the belief that you need a hard mattress to support your back. They wanted to show people that you don't have to sacrifice comfort for good posture when sleeping.

In the 90's they introduced Comfort Quilt, an important innovation. By improving circulation with the use of convoluted foam and fibers within the construction materials, Comfort Quilt helps reduce tossing and turning throughout the night.

In 2003 they introduced a very significant safety feature called Fire Blocker. They were the first prominent bedding manufacturer to include a flame retardant system in their products. All of their mattresses now come with this feature.

The Company Today

The company is still going strong today with an award winning ad campaign. The humorous Serta Counting Sheep have become a widely recognized icon through their TV commercials.
